The Redwood Room is a legendary bar in the Bay Area and rightfully so, because it will make you want to spend money you don’t have. The interior is made of redwood paneling and the bar (according to legend) was carved from a single redwood tree. On top of all that, the walls in this bar literary have eyes. Walls are decorated with “portraits” that are actually short videos changing every few seconds.
2. Watch a wrestling match
If you’re up for a more hardcore kind of fun, book yourself a place at the Oakland Metro Operahouse. The venue itself is epic and it hosts all kinds of events.
But on the first Friday of the month, there are wrestling matches. These “performances” can get pretty wild but it’s all for the sake of fun. And, as the guys and gals from Oakland Metro Operahouse kindly advise, “Don’t bring your fuc*ing kids!”
3. Visit the Institute of Illegal Images
This small, strange place may not appeal to everyone’s taste, but it definitely has its charm.
Mark McCloud is the proud owner of this Institute which has more than 30,000 pieces of art. The “illegal images” are actually psychedelic acid paintings made by famous artists such as Walt Disney, used without their permission so as not to connect them to any illegal activity. Even if you’re not a fan of art, this could be quite an interesting visit.
4. Do a hiking trip to Mission Peak
This one requires a little more physical activity because you will have to put some effort and walk to your destination. But if you’re a fan of hiking, it won’t be that difficult for you, especially because all the hiking is worth it at the end when you get to see the amazing view of the entire Bay Area.
Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring snacks, and don’t forget to take a photo of the “Mission Peaker” summit pole. If you come early enough, you can even catch the clouds which will be beneath you.
5. Relax on Stinson Beach
For those whose idea of fun doesn’t include hiking uphill for 3 miles, there’s the possibility of relaxing at the beach. If you’re looking to escape the city for a few hours, head out to Stinson Beach and enjoy the beautiful views.
Camping and barbequing are possible, so knock yourself out. The only challenging thing is getting there because of the narrow windy roads, but the beach is totally worth it.
6. Check out the Computer History Museum
If you’re passionate about technology, this is the perfect place for you. The entire museum is dedicated to the history of IT and you can see over 1,100 artifacts including some of the first computers ever made.
But this museum is so much more than that. You can even listen to lectures (recorded, of course) by some of the most important people in technology, you can explore the multimedia exhibitions, and even play some old computer games.
7. Watch a drag show at the Starlight Room
Eating brunch while drag queens entertain you will be one of the most surreal experiences you will ever have. So make sure you visit the Starlight Room which is a bar with excellent food and one of the best views in the city.
But it’s probably the most famous for its Sunday’s a Drag brunches accompanied by drag shows. All the visitors are amazed by the talented, fabulous queens that really know how to work the room.
8. Visit the Audium
Described as “sound-sculptured space”, it’s a one-of-a-kind place in the world. First of all, when you step into this theater you will feel like you have entered a time capsule because it hasn’t been changed since the early 70s.
And then you will enjoy a relaxing performance that consists of sounds passing all around you in the dark room. Visitors describe it as “weird” and “trippy” but definitely worth trying. The Audium is not one of your typical experiences, but it is bound to leave a strong impression on you.
